Genetics definitely is a critical component of how your chin shapes out. In a lot of people with a weak chin, there is an inadequate frontal projection of the jawbone or the mandible. However, another common reason for a recessed or weak chin profile is excess fat deposits under the chin.
If you have a weak chin profile, there are a number of highly effective non-surgical and surgical weak chin treatments Rockford patients can receive to give them a more defined chin.
Non-Surgical
Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical option for improving the appearance of a weak chin. Injectable fillers such as Radiesse, Sculptra (synthetic fillers), Juvéderm, and Restylane Defyne (HA fillers) are effective because they can instantly give your chin increased definition – in a lot of cases the results can be actually dramatic. Depending on the fillers used, you can expect results to last anywhere from 1 – 2+ years.
One advantage of using dermal fillers that are HA-based (Juvéderm, and Restylane Defyne) is that the fillers can be dissolved if you want to reverse the augmentation. With Synthetic fillers, however, the results are not reversible. Dermal fillers don’t require any downtime. Each chin filler session will take between 30–60 minutes – this includes the preparation time.
Chin injectable fillers can be painful. A topical anesthetic can be applied or an anesthetic can be injected prior to beginning the treatment. However, many dermal fillers contain lidocaine – so your treatment should be relatively comfortable.
Injectable Fillers
CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved non-invasive device that is used in the underside of the jaw to target submental fullness or a “double chin.” During the procedure, a percentage (20% - 25% of your fat cells are painlessly cooled.) The body then naturally gets rid of the fat cells which do not come back.
CoolSculpting does not require any downtime. Each treatment can take approximately 60 minutes. During CoolSculpting treatment will feel a cooling sensation that will dissipate when treatment is through. Depending on your condition, you may need one or two treatment sessions with each treatment spread four to six weeks apart. You can expect results within a month or two post-treatment.

Kybella injections are a popular choice for addressing fat deposits under the chin in people with a weak chin profile. The injection which contains deoxycholic acid (an enzyme found in the body) is an FDA-approved treatment option that works by breaking down fat cells – over a period of time, the broken down fat cells are then cleared away by the lymphatic system.
You can expect some degree of swelling which should slowly reduce and disappear usually within 10 – 14 days. Local anesthetic can help to ensure you do not experience any kind of pain or discomfort. Post-treatment, any pain or discomfort can easily be addressed with OTC pain medication. Recovery can take up to 2 days. However, in a lot of cases, patients don’t need any downtime and can resume their normal routine immediately after their Kybella treatment.

Another treatment option that can give your weak chin great definition is a chin implant. The implant used in this procedure is made of silicone rubber and comes in different sizes and shapes to suit different body types and goals. During the procedure, a small incision is made under the chin to insert the implant. Another route to insert the implant is through the mouth via a small incision – the implant is then fitted around the jawbone.
A chin implant can take about 30 minutes and is usually performed under local anesthesia so you will not feel any pain. You can expect some degree of swelling in the chin area which should take around 10 days to subside. Complete healing will take around 2- 3 months and you can expect to see full results then.

In addition to non-surgical options, a weak chin can also be addressed via surgical procedures. One such option is liposuction or submental liposuction. In this procedure, excess fat above the platysma muscle as well as fat deposits below the lower jawbone is removed. liposuction can address a double chin, and when combined with a chin implant can be used to give a weak chin enhanced definition and structure.
Liposuction requires only a single incision. If however, you have fat deposits below the lower jaw area, then an incision below each ear will be required. The procedure can be completed in less than 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthetic so you not feel any pain or discomfort. You can expect some swelling post-treatment which will slowly subside over a few weeks. You can also expect to see immediate results after your liposuction – full results, however, can be expected 4 – 6 weeks post-treatment.
Liposuction
Chin Surgery, typically performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, address the issue of a weak chin by first cutting the jawbone and then moving the jawbone forward to achieve the desired degree of projection. Small incisions are made inside the mouth to access the jawbone – so you don’t have to worry about visible scars. Once the jaw has been moved forward, thin titanium screws are used to secure the bone. The screws are not visible and you will not feel them at any point.
Chin Surgery can take about 1 hour and is performed as an outpatient procedure. Chin Surgery is performed under general anesthesia. You can expect some downtime – most patients resume their normal routine 7 – 10 days post-surgery with a recovery period of 2 – 3 weeks.
Chin Surgery Surgery
A Neck Lift or platysmaplasty as it is medically known is another surgical procedure that is used to address a weak chin. In some patients, excess fat deposits and sagging skin under the platysma muscle can be the reason for a weak chin profile. When a deficient mandible bone cannot provide the needed soft-tissue support, it can lead to significant fat deposits in the neck area. In such a situation, it is necessary to perform both a Neck Lift and a chin implant to give both the chin and jawline better definition and structure.
In case a patient has loose and sagging skin in the neck area after fat deposits have been removed, then they might be advised a lower face and Neck Lift to address the issue. A Neck Lift can take anywhere between 1 – 3 hours. A Neck Lift is performed under general anesthesia and as an outpatient procedure. You can expect a downtime of 7 – 10 days.
