Many people don’t think much about their ears – but if they are a prominent feature, overly large or prominent ears can consume your thoughts.
Children can be the greatest victims, falling prey to bullies who tease about the size of their ears. Fortunately, children with abnormalities of the ear can have surgery as early as the age of five, when the ears reach their full size.
Dr. Landon Pryor has vast experience in ear surgery and can guide you through the process for correcting ear appearance or abnormalities.
Otoplasty, also referred to as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to change the shape, size, or position of the ears. Otoplasty may be performed at any time once a child’s ears have reached full maturity, usually at the age of five. Otoplasty is an option if you feel that your ears protrude too far from your head, or if your ears are misshapen due to trauma or a birth defect.
Prominent ears are often the result of a malformation of the cartilage of the ear and are very frequently passed down from parent to child.
In a normal ear, the cartilage of the upper ear folds in a manner that allows it to rest neatly against the side of the head. Prominent ears may be missing this fold, causing the cartilage to protrude at an extreme angle from the head.
Otoplasty can give the ear a more natural appearance, saving children from years of teasing and name-calling. Otoplasty is an excellent option for correcting:
In small children, it is often recommended that otoplasty be performed under general anesthesia. For older children or teenagers, local or twilight anesthesia is often used. The techniques used in otoplasty will be determined by what sort of abnormalities are being corrected in the ears. Once incisions have been made, Dr. Pryor may remove excess cartilage or skin before closing the incision with sutures. Otoplasty typically takes about two hours.
Following the procedure, the ears will be bandaged to protect the new ear structure and the incisions. It is important to avoid sleeping on your ears, and to avoid putting excess pressure on the ears while they heal. It is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort following otoplasty. Dr. Pryor can provide you with pain medication to allow you to recover in a more comfortable manner. Bandages will be removed from the ears a few days following your procedure, and Dr. Pryor will provide you with a headband that should be worn while you sleep. He can advise you about when it will be possible to resume your normal activities at this time.
By the age of six, your child can participate in the discussion of whether to pursue surgery to correct prominent ears. It is important to ask your child detailed questions about teasing at school, so you have a complete understanding of how he or she feels about their ears. Once you have had the opportunity to talk it over, you should know whether you should pursue a surgical procedure to correct his or her prominent ears.
Dr. Pryor has vast experience performing otoplasty and understands how prominent ears can play a critical role in one’s self-esteem. If you or your child are suffering due to prominent ears, this suffering doesn’t need to continue. Allow Dr. Pryor to help you or your child live life with greater self-confidence.
