Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy involves the injection or microneedling application of a patient’s own platelets into the skin to repair damaged tissue.
It is used cosmetically to create a rejuvenated appearance in the face, hands, chest, vagina, and other parts of the body, as well as for hair restoration.

Platelet-rich plasma within the patient’s own blood is injected into the treatment area to promote growth. PRP Therapy can be used to treat chronic pain, promote healing after an injury, or cosmetically as an anti-aging treatment.
There are several methods of delivering rejuvenating PRP to damaged cells. For larger areas of skin, PRP may be applied topically following microneedling to allow for deep, even penetration of the PRP into the skin. For rejuvenating treatments to specific areas of the body, such as the area under the eyes or the vagina, injections offer more dramatic, though concentrated results. Injections are also used in PRP treatments for hair restoration. PRP injections may be used to prepare the scalp for grafting, after grafting to maintain results, to slow hair loss, or to strengthen hair follicles.
PRP therapy utilizes the body’s own healing process to promote the repair and to enhance the growth of new tissue.
Platelets, which are present in the blood’s plasma, are responsible for the clotting of blood and greatly contribute to the body’s repair process. During PRP treatment, platelet-rich plasma from the patient’s blood is injected into the treatment area, boosting collagen growth, skin repair, or hair growth. Cellular growth and repair rejuvenate the skin and hair, and create a more youthful overall appearance. Since PRP only enhances the body’s own growth and repair system, the results look completely natural.
In order for the patient’s PRP to be extracted for treatment, blood must first be drawn. The platelets within the blood are concentrated with the use of a centrifuge. During this time, the treatment area will be prepped and an anesthetic will be administered. The method of anesthetic application may vary depending on the type of PRP treatment being performed. The method of application of the PRP substance may also vary depending on treatment location.
Some treatments may involve microneedling prior to the topical application of PRP for overall skin health. Other treatments such as under eye rejuvenation, hair restoration, vaginal rejuvenation, or treatments to other parts of the body may receive PRP through multiple injections. Some discomfort may be experienced during microneedling or injections, but the treatment should be tolerable. Treatment typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and location of the treatment area.
Makeup should not be applied to the treatment area for 24 hours, and skin care products should be avoided until the area is fully healed.
Extreme cold or heat (including from a bath or sauna) should be avoided for the first 3 days. After that, ice may be used to reduce discomfort. While patients may return to their regular routine the day after treatment, healing time should be considered when scheduling your PRP treatment. A microneedling PRP treatment requires no real downtime. However, patients can expect some redness, swelling, irritation, and rough texture in the treatment area for the first 3 to 7 days.
Recovery from PRP injections for skin rejuvenation ranges from 2 to 4 weeks, depending on your body’s rate of healing. Redness, itching, bruising or discoloration, and irritation in the injection area may occur, but should subside within 3 to 7 days. Recovery from PRP injections for hair restoration may include pain, itching, irritation, and swelling at the injection sites. These issues usually diminish after 3 to 4 weeks, and should be completely resolved within 3 to 6 months.
Results from microneedling PRP procedures should begin to appear within a week, with full results appearing 1 to 2 months after treatment due to the progressive results of increased collagen production. Results can last as long as 1 to 2 years.
Results from PRP injections into specific areas of the body may begin to appear immediately upon healing and will continue to improve for several months. Monthly injections for 3-4 months may be needed to achieve desired results. Results last 6 to 12 months.
PRP injections for hair restoration will stimulate stem cell growth within the hair follicles to promote hair growth over the following few weeks. Women and men tend to notice results between 2 to 3 months following treatment. A series of 2-6 treatments is often necessary, and consists of several consecutive monthly treatments followed by treatments every 3 to 6 months.
